on the Treaty on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan
On 24 June 1981, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was signed in Prague.
The Treaty was approved by the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and ratified by the President of the Republic. The instruments of ratification were exchanged in Kabul on 8 November 1982.
The Treaty entered into force on 8 November 1982 pursuant to Article 10 thereof.
The Czech version of the Treaty is hereby published at the same time.

TREATY
on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan
The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Republic of Afghanistan, taking into account the relationship of friendship, solidarity and brotherly cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Republic of Afghanistan, which rely on the traditional friendship of the people of both countries and the consistency of their noble goals in the fight to build a progressive and fair society,
Believing that further strengthening of friendship and deepening of all-round cooperation is in line with the interests of the people of both countries and serves to strengthen peace and security in the world,
Recognising that the unity of all revolutionary forces and the cooperation of socialist and developing countries are important factors in strengthening the independence of liberated countries,
declaring a strong will to continue to contribute actively to the cause of peace and security in Asia, Europe and the world, the fight against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, expansionism, hegemonism and any form of domination and oppression, contributing to the unity of all forces fighting for national independence, democracy and social progress in the world,
confirming their commitment to the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter, the consistent implementation of which they regard as one of the major means of strengthening peace in the world,
attaching great importance to the further development and consolidation of the contractual legal basis of their relations,
they have agreed as follows:
The High Contracting Parties will deepen the relationship between lasting friendship and brotherly solidarity. They will aim to develop all-round cooperation between the two States and provide mutual assistance and support, based on mutual respect for national sovereignty and independence, equality and non-interference in internal affairs.
The High Contracting Parties will make use of all possibilities to expand and intensify mutually beneficial bilateral and multilateral economic and scientific and technological cooperation on a long-term basis, thereby contributing to increasing the well-being of the people of both states.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to develop and deepen cooperation between the two States in the fields of science and culture, education, health, mass media, sport and other areas.
The High Contracting Parties will facilitate cooperation between the authorities of state power and between social organisations working in order to deepen their participation in society's life and to better identify and bring the people of both countries closer together.
The High Contracting Parties express their firm commitment to further deepening friendship and all-round cooperation with the countries of the Socialist Community, as well as the unity and solidarity of the countries of the Socialist Community, the national liberation movement and all progressive and democratic forces worldwide.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to seek consistent implementation of the principles of peaceful coexistence of states with a different social establishment, broadening and deepening the process of easing tensions in international relations and actively contributing to the definitive elimination of aggression and war from the life of nations. They will continue to fight decisively against the plotting and attacking of the enemies of peace, against imperialism, expansionism and hegemonism, for stopping arms races, for general and total disarmament.
They will support the fight of non-participating countries, the nations of Asia, Africa and Latin America for the definitive elimination of colonialism, neo-colonialism and racism in all its forms and manifestations, their fight against imperialism, for the consolidation of independence and sovereignty, for the right to freely dispose of their own natural resources and for the establishment of equal international economic relations without dictation and exploitation.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to seek to ensure security in Europe and Asia, to maintain and consolidate peace and security in the world. In doing so, they regard respect for the universally accepted principles of border integrity and territorial integrity as one of the most important preconditions for ensuring peace and security.
The High Contracting Parties shall inform and advise each other on all major international issues, including their mutual relations, pursuing the interests of both Parties and the interests of all the progressive and democratic forces in the world.
This Treaty shall not affect the rights and obligations of both Parties under the bilateral and multilateral agreements in force which bind them and shall not be directed against any third country.
This Treaty shall be subject to ratification and shall enter into force by exchange of instruments of ratification, which shall take place as soon as possible in Kabul.
This Agreement shall be concluded for a period of 25 years and shall be automatically extended by a further 10 years unless one of the High Contracting Parties is terminated 12 months before the expiry of the period of validity.
