Minister:
Ing. Chupek v. r.
LONG-TERM TRADE AND PAYMENT AGREEMENT
BETWEEN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
AND THE REPUBLIC OF ISLAND
The Government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Government of the Republic of Iceland, wishing to strengthen economic cooperation and to promote the development of trade between the two countries on the basis of equality and mutual advantages and taking into account the principles of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, to which both countries are Contracting Parties, have agreed as follows:
The exchange of goods between the two countries shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement, the rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the internal rules in force in each of the two countries applied in accordance with those Agreements.
The Government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Government of the Republic of Iceland shall take all necessary measures to maximise the exchange of goods between the two countries.
Both governments shall grant each other treatment, which shall not be worse than that accorded to another Party to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, in respect of the application of quantitative restrictions on imports and exports of goods.
The exchange of goods and services between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Republic of Iceland will take place on the basis of contracts concluded between Czechoslovak legal persons authorised to conduct foreign trade on the one hand and legal and natural persons domiciled in Iceland on the other.
This Agreement is accompanied by an indicative list of Icelandic goods for which there is a particular interest in exports to Czechoslovakia. The quantities and values listed represent estimates of annual Icelandic exports to Czechoslovakia.
All current salaries between the two countries will be performed in freely convertible currencies in accordance with the generally used foreign exchange regulations applicable in each of the two countries and with a technical arrangement agreed between the Czechoslovak Commercial Bank a. s. and Soölabanki Íslands.
A Joint Commission is hereby established to monitor the implementation of this Agreement and to examine the possibilities of removing barriers which could arise in trade between the two countries and to propose such ideas as would help to develop economic relations between the Contracting Parties.
The Joint Committee shall meet as a priority once a year and at the request of either Contracting Party at any time within two months of such request. The meetings will take place alternately in Prague and Reykjavik.
This Agreement replaces the Long-term Trade and Payment Agreement between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Republic of Iceland signed in Brno on 12 September 1966.
This Agreement shall enter into force on the date of signature and shall apply until 30 September 1976.
Validity The Agreement shall then be extended in silence for an additional period of one year, unless either Party notifies its intention to terminate the Agreement six months before the expiry of any period of validity.
Written and signed in Reykjavik on 12 October 1971 in two original copies in English.
