Minister for Foreign Affairs
of 24 July 1972
on the Long-term Trade Agreement between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
On 27 June 1972, the Long-term Trade Agreement between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was signed in London.
Pursuant to Article 8 thereof, the Agreement entered into force on the date of signature, i.e. 27 June 1972.
The Czech version of the Agreement is hereby published at the same time.
First Deputy Minister:
Krajčir v. r.
LONG-TERM TRADE AGREEMENT
between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
the Government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,
confirming its interest in promoting and developing trade relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual benefits,
taking into account the principles of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, of which both countries are the original Contracting Parties,
agree as follows:
The Parties shall endeavour to create conditions for the continuous growth of trade between the two countries, both as regards goods which have traditionally been exchanged between them and as regards new products. They will seek to improve trade patterns and, in particular, to increase trade in machinery and equipment and other industrial and investment goods.
(1) The exchange of goods between the two countries will take place in accordance with the provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and under this Agreement.
(2) The adjustment provided for the import of goods of British origin into the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and Czechoslovak origin into the United Kingdom shall be determined each year after consultation between the Contracting Parties.
The Contracting Parties shall refrain from taking measures which would restrict the possibility of using ships flying the flag of the other Contracting Party in the transport of goods between the two countries and in relation to third countries. The provisions of this Article shall not affect the authorisations of third-country vessels to take part in the carriage of goods between the two countries.
Payments for goods and services under this Agreement shall be made in freely convertible currencies.
This Agreement shall apply to the territory of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the territory of the United Kingdom. The term "territory" in relation to the United Kingdom will include England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Each Contracting Party reserves the right to enter into consultations with the other Contracting Party in the light of its international obligations. However, such consultations shall not affect the fundamental objectives of this Agreement.
The trade arrangement between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed on 8 November 1967 is hereby replaced by this Agreement.
This Agreement shall enter into force on the date of signature and shall apply until 31 December 1974.
In evidence of this, the signing, duly mandated by their respective governments, signed this agreement.
Made in London on 27 June 1972 in the Czech and English languages, both texts being equally authentic.
