on the Treaty on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the People's Republic of Angola
On 12 October 1981 the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the People's Republic of Angola was signed in Prague.
The Treaty was approved by the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and ratified by the President of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The instruments of ratification were exchanged in Luanda on 24 January 1984.
The Treaty entered into force on 24 January 1984 pursuant to Article 12 thereof.
The Czech version of the Treaty is hereby published at the same time.

TREATY
on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the People's Republic of Angola
Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and Angola People's Republic,
building on close relations of friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak and Angolan people born in the joint fight against imperialism and colonialism,
Believing that relations between the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the MPLA, based on the principles of marxism-leninism and proletarian internationalism, form the basis of relations of friendship and cooperation between both nations and countries,
Recognising that these relations correspond to the interests of both nations and countries and contribute to the consolidation and development of the revolutionary features of both nations and the maintenance of peace and international security,
promoting the unity of action and cooperation of all the progressive forces in the fight for peace, freedom, independence and social progress,
inspired by the common ideas of combating imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism and racism in all their forms and speeches,
convinced of the need to strengthen efforts to eliminate economic backwardness in order to establish international economic order on the principles of justice and equality, guided by the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter,
decide to conclude this friendship and cooperation agreement and agree as follows:
The Contracting Parties solemnly declare their decision to develop and deepen relations of friendship and cooperation on the basis of the principles of respect for sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, equality and non-interference in internal affairs.
The Parties shall endeavour to extend political, economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation and trade relations on the basis of the principles of equality and mutual benefit.
The Parties will extend direct contacts between social organisations and cultural and scientific institutions with a view to achieving a better mutual understanding of life, work, experience and building results for the people of both countries.
The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic appreciates the policy of disengagement of the People's Republic of Angola as an important factor in the fight against imperialism, for liberation of nations, for peace and cooperation between all countries of the world.
The People's Republic of Angola appreciates the Socialist Foreign Policy of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic as an important contribution to the issue of security of peace in Europe and the world, to consolidate international security and the process of easing international tensions.
The Parties will continue to contribute to the fight for peace and international security and will make efforts to deepen the process of international easing and to extend it to the military region in order to achieve universal and complete disarmament, including nuclear, under effective international control, as well as to eliminate the use of force in international relations and to resolve disputes between states by peaceful means.
The Parties will continue to contribute actively to the fight for the final destruction of colonialism, neo-colonialism and racism in all their forms and speeches, for the full implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Independence of Colonial Countries and Nations.
The Parties shall seek democratic reforming of international economic relations and declare themselves in solidarity in the fight to establish international economic order on the principles of justice and equality.
In order to specify the provisions of this Treaty, the Contracting Parties shall carry out periodic consultations at different levels with a view to exchanging views on the development of mutual relations and on international issues.
The Contracting Parties hereby solemnly undertake not to participate in any volume, action or activity directed against the other Contracting Party.
The Contracting Parties declare that their obligations under other international agreements concluded by them are not contrary to the provisions of this Treaty and undertake not to conclude any international agreement contrary to the provisions of this Treaty.
Any question which may arise between the Parties in the context of the interpretation or implementation of any provisions of this Treaty shall be addressed by direct negotiation in a spirit of friendship, understanding and mutual respect.
This Treaty shall be subject to ratification and shall enter into force on the date of the exchange of instruments of ratification to be held in Luanda, the capital of the People's Republic of Angola.
This Agreement shall be negotiated for a period of 20 years and shall be automatically extended for an additional period of five years, unless one of the Contracting Parties demonstrates in writing its wish to terminate it 1 year before the expiry date.
Dane in Prague on 12 October 1981 in two copies, each in the Czech and Portuguese languages, the two texts being equally authentic.
