on the Treaty on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Lao People's Democratic Republic
On 17 February 1980, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was signed in Vientiane.
The Treaty was approved by the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and ratified by the President of the Republic. The instruments of ratification were exchanged in Prague on 2 July 1981.
Pursuant to Article 10 thereof, the Treaty entered into force on 2 July 1981.
The Czech version of the Treaty is published simultaneously.

TREATY
on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Lao People's Democratic Republic
Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and Lao People's Democratic Republic,
taking into account the relations between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Lao People's Democratic Republic of friendship, solidarity and brotherly cooperation in the joint fight against imperialism and response and in the process of building socialism,
Convincing that further strengthening of friendship and deepening of universal cooperation on the principles of marxism and socialist internationalism is in line with the interests of the people of both countries and serves to strengthen peace and security in the world,
expressing the firm will to continue to contribute actively to international peace and security, the fight against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, expansionism and any form of domination and oppression, contributing to the unity of all forces fighting for national independence, democracy and social progress in the world,
attaching great importance to the further development and consolidation of the contractual legal basis of their relations,
agree as follows:
In accordance with the principles of socialist internationalism, the High Contracting Parties will continue to deepen the relationship of lasting friendship and solidarity. They will develop versatile cooperation between the two countries, exchange experience from the construction of socialism and provide mutual assistance and support, based on mutual respect for national sovereignty and independence, equality and non-interference in internal affairs.
The High Contracting Parties, looking at mutual benefit, will use all possibilities to expand and intensify mutually beneficial bilateral and multilateral economic and scientific and technological cooperation on a long-term basis, thereby contributing to increasing the well-being of the people of both states.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to develop and deepen cooperation between the two States in the fields of science and culture, education, health, mass media, sport and tourism, as well as in other areas.
The High Contracting Parties will assist cooperation between the authorities of state power and between social organisations working in order to deepen their participation in the building of a socialist society and in order to better identify and bring the people of both countries closer together.
The High Contracting Parties express their firm commitment to further deepening the relationship of friendship and brotherly cooperation with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and other socialist countries, actively contributing to the consolidation of the unity and unity of the socialist community, and to taking the necessary steps to ensure the defence of socialism facilities.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to seek consistent implementation of the principles of peaceful coexistence of states with a different social establishment, broadening and deepening the process of easing tensions in international relations and actively contributing to the definitive elimination of aggression and war from the life of nations. They will continue to fight decisively against the plotting and attacking of the enemies of peace, against imperialism, expansionism and hegemonism, for stopping arms races, for general and total disarmament.
They will support the fight of non-participating countries, the nations of Asia, Africa and Latin America for the definitive elimination of colonialism, neo-colonialism and racism in all its forms and manifestations, their fight against imperialism, for the consolidation of independence and sovereignty, for the right to freely dispose of their own natural resources and for the establishment of equal international economic relations without dictation and exploitation.
The High Contracting Parties will continue to seek to ensure security in Europe and Asia, to maintain and consolidate peace and security in the world. In doing so, they regard respect for the principle of the integrity of borders and territorial integrity as the most important prerequisite for ensuring peace and security.
The High Contracting Parties shall inform and advise each other on all important international issues, including those of their mutual relations, following the interests of both Parties and the interests of the Socialist Community as a whole.
This Treaty shall not affect the rights and obligations of both Parties under the bilateral and multilateral agreements in force which bind them and shall not be directed against any third country.
This Treaty is subject to ratification and will enter into force by exchange of instruments of ratification, which will take place as soon as possible in Prague.
This Agreement shall be concluded for a period of 25 years and shall be automatically extended by a further 10 years unless one of the High Contracting Parties is terminated 12 months before the expiry of the period of validity.
Done at Vientiane, 17 February 1980, in duplicate in Czech and Laotian languages, the two texts being equally authentic.
