Slovak National Council
of 27 June 1969
on the territorial breakdown of the Slovak Socialist Republic
The Slovak National Council decided on this law:
(1) The territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic is divided into districts and districts are divided into municipalities.
(2) The territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic of Bratislava constitutes a special territorial unit.
(1) The following counties are in the Slovak Socialist Republic:

(2) The city under which the county is named is its seat.
It is only possible to establish and abolish districts in the Slovak Socialist Republic by law of the Slovak National Council.
(1) The change in the territory of the district or its registered office is implemented by the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic by a regulation.
(2) The territory of the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic of Bratislava can be changed only by the Law of the Slovak National Council; other changes are implemented by the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic by a regulation.
Of the important social interests, in particular to create better assumptions for further economic and cultural development of municipalities, it is possible to create, abolish or merge municipalities or to make another change to their territories. Such a measure, if it is a municipality in the same district and it is agreed with the local national committees and citizens of the municipalities concerned; the Regional National Committee decides, otherwise it is for the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic to decide.
(1) It is for the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic to determine the names of the municipalities and their parts (settlements, local or urban areas) and to make changes thereto, in cooperation with the relevant regional and local national committees.
(2) The regulations on the identification of the names of the municipality and its parts, the labelling of the streets and other public spaces and the numbering of houses are issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic.
The Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic shall draw up and publish a list of municipalities forming individual counties; declare also changes to this list resulting from changes made under this Act.
(1) In accordance with the territorial breakdown of the Slovak Socialist Republic under this Act, the organisation of national committees shall be adapted.
(2) The organisation of other government bodies operating in the districts of existing regions outside the national committees shall be adapted accordingly to the tasks of these bodies, taking into account the territorial breakdown of the Slovak Socialist Republic.
(1) The territorial districts of the Regional Courts and the Regional Prosecutors in the Slovak Socialist Republic remain unaffected until the Constitutional Act on the organisation of courts and prosecutors is passed.
(2) The territorial districts of regional State arbitrage remain unaffected by this law.
(1) The following provisions of Act No. 36 / 1960 Coll., on the Territorial Classification of the State are deleted:
(a) Article 2 (2), as amended by Article 2 (1) of Act No. 29 / 1968 Coll., on amendments to certain laws relating to the modification of the status of the National Committee of the Capital of Slovakia Bratislava;
(b) Paragraph 3, Nos 8 to 10;
(c) Article 11 as amended by Article 2 No 2 of Act No. 29 / 1968 Coll.;
(d) Paragraph 12, as amended by § 1 (1) of Government Decree No. 36 / 1968 Coll., creating the counties of the Great Krtít, Vranov, Svidník and the Old Vladubovňa;
e) § 13 as amended by § 79 (1) of Act No. 69 / 1967 Coll., on National Committees, and § 1 (2) of Decree No. 36 / 1968 Coll.
(2) Other provisions of Act No. 36 / 1960 Coll., where they are regulated by this Act, do not apply in the territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic.
(3) Paragraph 2 of Decree No. 97 / 1961 Coll., on the names of municipalities, street marking and house numbering, does not apply to the territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic.
This Act shall take effect on 1 July 1969.
