The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that on 1 November 1974 the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974 was negotiated and signed on behalf of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, and on 17 February 1978 the Protocol 1978 to the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 was adopted there.
The instrument of approval of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic was deposited with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation, depositary of the Convention, on 18 August 1980.
The Charter on the Access of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to Protocol 1978 to the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, was deposited with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation on 2 June 1983.
The Convention entered into force on 25 May 1980 on the basis of its Article X (a) and entered into force on 18 November 1980 for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic pursuant to the same Article (b).
Protocol 1978 entered into force on the basis of its Article In paragraph 1, on 1 May 1981 and for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic pursuant to the same Article, paragraph 2, it entered into force on 2 September 1983.
The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, replaced the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1960, which entered into force for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic on 5 October 1967, with effect from 25 May 1965 between its Contracting Parties, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1948, which entered into force for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic on 25 June 1957.
On 19 October 1993, the Czech Republic notified the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation that, in accordance with the applicable principles of international law, the successor State of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic was to be considered, with effect from 1 January 1993, to be bound by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, 1 November 1974, and Protocol 1978 of 18 February 1978, as amended.
