COMMUNICATION
Czech Statistical Office
of 17 January 2005
to introduce TNM classification of malignant neoplasms and International classification of diseases for oncology (MKN-O-3)
The Czech Statistical Office in cooperation with the Ministry of Health pursuant to § 19 (2) of Act No. 89 / 1995 Coll., on the State Statistical Service, as amended, introduces with effect from the date of publication of TNM classification of malignant neoplasms, 6th edition 2002, Czech version 2004 and International classification of diseases for oncology (MKN-O-3).
TNM classification of malignant neoplasms, 6th edition 2002, Czech version 2004 is a system for describing the anatomical extent of diseases based on the determination of three components:
T - range of primary tumor,
N - absence or presence and extent of metastases in regional lymph nodes,
M - absence or presence of distant metastases.
Allocation of the digit to these three components gives the extent of the malignant tumor.
TNM classification of malignant neoplasms replaces the previous 5th edition of 1997 TNM classification of malignant neoplasms, Czech version 2000, valid from 1 January 2001.
International classification of diseases for oncology (MKN-O-3), 3rd edition, Czech version, is a double classification with coding systems for topography and morphology. The topographical code describes the origin of the tumor and uses the same three-digit and four-digit categories (codes) that MKN-10 uses for malignant tumours (C00 - C80). This allows for greater specificity for the coding of non-malignant tumours than possible in MKN-10. The morphological code describes the cell type forming the tumor and the biological activity of the tumor (describes the characteristics of the tumor as such).
The international classification of diseases for oncology replaces the second edition of the International classification of diseases for oncology (MKN-O-2) valid from 1 January 1994.
TNM classification of malignant neoplasms, 6th edition 2002, Czech version 2004 and International classification of diseases for oncology (MKN-O-3), 3rd edition, Czech version, can be obtained in electronic form (pdf format) and to a limited extent also in book form in the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic, Palacký Square 4, 128 01 Prague 2 (p.o. box 60). Both classifications are also available on the website of the Czech Republic (www.uzis.cz).
