Constitutional Law
of 26 May 1954
concerning elections to the National Assembly and elections to the Slovak National Council.
The National Assembly of the Czechoslovak Republic decided on the following constitutional law:
(1) The National Assembly and the Slovak National Council are elected by working people for six years.
(2) The right to vote is general, equal and direct; The vote is secret. Citizens may vote once they have reached the age of 18; citizens may be elected once they have reached the age of 21.
(1) Elections to the National Assembly and elections to the Slovak National Council are held according to the constituencies. One Member shall be elected in each constituency. The surrogates are not elected.
(2) For elections, so many constituencies will be created, that every 35,000 people will have one constituency.
A Member of the National Assembly and a Member of the Slovak National Council may be dismissed if the voters so decide.
(1) The election to the National Assembly, as well as the way in which Members of the National Assembly are removed, are governed by the law.
(2) Election to the Slovak National Council, as well as the way in which Members of the Slovak National Council are withdrawn, is governed by the Law of the Slovak National Council.
The election date for the National Assembly and the Slovak National Council shall be determined by the Government of the Czechoslovak Republic no later than 60 days in advance.
(1) The National Assembly elected on 30 May 1948 remains in operation until the new National Assembly has been elected under this Constitutional Law, but no later than 31 December 1954.
(2) The Slovak National Council remains in operation until the new Slovak National Council is elected under this Constitutional Act, but no later than 31 December 1954.
This constitutional law shall take effect on the day of its publication; it shall be carried out by all members of the Government.
