Communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the International Convention on the Measurement of Ships (TONNAGE), 1969

Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the International Convention for the Measurement of Ships (TONNAGE), 1969, was adopted in London on 23 June 1969.
The Charter on the access of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to the International Convention on the Measurement of Ships, 1969, was deposited with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation, the depositary of the Convention, on 10 April 1974.
The following statement was made in access to the Convention: "Accessing the International Convention on the Measurement of Ships, the Government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic wishes to declare that Article 16 of the Convention is contrary to the universally recognised principle of equivalent sovereignty of the States and Article 20 of the Declaration of Independence to Colonial Countries and Nations, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 14 December 1960. '
The Convention entered into force on 18 July 1982 on the basis of Article 17 (1) and entered into force on that date for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.
On 19 October 1993, the Czech Republic notified the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation that, in accordance with the applicable principles of international law, the successor State of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic was deemed to be bound by the International Convention on the Measurement of Ships (TONNAGE), 1969, of 23 June 1969, including a declaration with effect from 1 January 1993. The Czech Republic withdrew its declaration on Article 16 and Article 20 by notification to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation on 6 July 1995.
