on the Treaty on friendship and cooperation between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Ethiopian Empire
On 11 December 1959, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the Czechoslovak Republic and the Ethiopian Empire was signed in Addis Ababa.
The Treaty was approved by the National Assembly on 18 February 1960 and ratified by the President of the Republic on 21 March 1960. The instruments of ratification were exchanged in Addis Ababa on 11 May 1960.
Pursuant to Article IV thereof, the Treaty entered into force on the date of the replacement of the instruments of ratification, i.e. 11 May 1960.
The Czech version of the Treaty is hereby published at the same time.

CONTRACT ON FRIENDS AND COOPERATION
between
CZECH REPUBLIC AND ETHIOPAN OBJECTIVES
Czechoslovakia and Ethiopian Empire
Desiring to strengthen traditional friendly relations that have long been between the two countries,
led by efforts to develop and strengthen mutual friendly economic and cultural contacts and cooperation between Czechoslovakia and Ethiopia on the basis of mutual respect for national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual advantages,
firmly committed to contributing to mutual relations to alleviate international tensions, to creating trust between states and to developing international cooperation,
convinced that the development and consolidation of friendly relations and cooperation between them correspond to the interests of both countries,
Desiring to pursue in their mutual relations the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter
have decided to negotiate this Treaty and have appointed their agents to do so:

J. E. Ato Yilma Deressa, Minister of Foreign Affairs,
who have exchanged their powers of attorney and found them in good and proper form, have agreed on the following provisions:
1. There will be eternal peace and lasting friendship between Czechoslovakia and Ethiopia.
2. The Contracting Parties shall address any dispute which may arise between them solely through peaceful means within the framework of the United Nations Charter.
The Parties shall develop and consolidate mutual contacts in the fields of science, culture, technology and education, thereby contributing to mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.
The Parties take the view that mutual economic cooperation is a solid basis for their peaceful and friendly relations and will therefore help each other economically in the interests of peaceful construction and progress of their countries and develop economic cooperation beneficial to both countries.
1. This Treaty shall be ratified in accordance with the constitutional provisions of each of the Contracting Parties and shall enter into force on the date of the replacement of the instruments of ratification which will take place in Addis Ababa.
2. It shall remain in force for a period of three years from the date on which it enters into force and shall then be extended without further delay for another three-year period unless one of the Contracting Parties notifies in writing six months before the expiry of the current three-year period its intention to terminate this Treaty.
Done at Addis Ababa, on 11 December 1959, in duplicate, in the Czech, Amharan and English languages, all three texts being equally authentic except in the case of a different interpretation in which the English text is decisive.
