THE LAW
Slovak National Council
of 28 December 1970
on the territorial breakdown of the Slovak Socialist Republic
The Slovak National Council decided on this law:
(1) The territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic is divided into regions, counties are subdivided into counties and counties are subdivided into municipalities.
(2) The territory of the Slovak Socialist Republic of Bratislava constitutes a special territorial unit.
In the Slovak Socialist Republic, the following regions are:
1. Západoslovenský kraj,
2. Central Slovak region with its seat in Banská Bystrica,
3. East Slovak region with its seat in Košice.
The following counties are located in the region of West Slovakia:
1. Kreis Bratislava-rural,
2. Danube Wednesday District,
3. Galanta County,
4. Komárno district,
5. District of the Left,
6. Nitra district,
7. District of New Castle,
8. Senica County,
9. The district of Topoľčany,
10. Trencin district,
11. Trnava district.
The following counties are located in the Mediterranean region:
1. Banská Bystrica district,
2. Čadca district,
3. Kreis Dolní Kubín,
4. District of Liptovský Mikulas,
5. District of Lucenec,
6. District Martin,
7. District of Reza Bystrica,
8. Kreis Prievidza,
9. Kreis Rimava Saturday,
10. The District of the Big Mole,
11. Zvolen district,
12. Kreis Žiar nad Hronom,
13. District of Zilina.
The following counties are in the Eastern Slovak Region:
1. The district of Bardejov,
2. Humenné county,
3. Kreis Košice-town,
4. Kreis Košice-rural,
5. The district of Michalovka,
6. Potrad County,
7. Prešov district,
8. The district of Rožňava,
9. District of Spišská Nová Ves,
10. The district of Stará Buda,
11. The District of Svidník,
12. Kreis Trebišov,
13. Vranov County over Topľa.
The town by which the county is named is its seat.
(1) A Slovak National Council may create or abolish a region, substantially change its territory or change its registered office; Other changes to the territory of the regions are carried out by the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic by a regulation.
(2) The Slovak National Council may create or abolish a district. The territory of the district may be substantially altered or its registered office changed by the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic; other changes to the territory of the counties shall be made by the Regional National Committees.
(3) The territory of the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic of Bratislava can be substantially amended by the Law of the Slovak National Council; other changes to the territory are implemented by the Government of the Slovak Socialist Republic by a regulation.
From important social interests, in particular to create better assumptions for further economic and cultural development of municipalities, municipalities may be created, cancelled or merged or otherwise changed in their territories. Such a measure, if it is a municipality in the same district and it is agreed with the local national committees and citizens of the municipalities concerned, shall be decided by the district national committee; it is decided by the Regional National Committee.
(1) It is for the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic to determine and change the names of municipalities and their parts (settlements, urban areas, etc.) in cooperation with the relevant regional and local (urban) national committees.
(2) The Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic shall issue regulations on the identification of the names of municipalities and their parts, streets and other public spaces and on the numbering of buildings.
The Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic shall draw up and publish a list of municipalities forming individual counties and counties; declare also amendments to that list resulting from amendments made under this Act.
The Act of the Slovak National Council No. 71 / 1969 Coll., on the Territorial Classification of the Slovak Socialist Republic is hereby repealed.
This Act shall take effect on 1 January 1971.
